For the upcoming 2019 white-faced storm petrel (Pelagodroma marina) breeding season, Maio Biodiversity Foundation (FMB) needs 1 to 2 Msc/Bsc/assistant students.
FMB is looking for keen, enthusiastic students who can start in February 2019. We are looking for people who love to be outdoors and are capable to work in challenging conditions in the small islet with a colony of breeding white-faced storm petrel (monitoring adult and chicks, ringing, nest choice description, monitoring predation…). The students will not be staying in the islet but fieldwork can last for several hours per day.
Some experience with petrels is needed, particularly with captures and handling as these students would ideally lead the fieldwork and double check if methodologies are being followed correctly whilst providing training to local people. Additional experience in swimming will be useful (swimming at sea at distances of only 400 m). The team is mainly constituted by locals and they all have basic knowledge of English, however willingness to learn Portuguese would be good as data is collected in Portuguese. Attention to detail is essential.
Most weekends will be free for the students to rest and carry out fun activities such as snorkeling, diving, hiking or simply sunbath in the year-round sunny island with pristine and white sandy beaches.
Ideally, we are looking for people who can stay from February to June, but if it is not possible, write us anyway. Stay and meals are included. You will be hosted in our HOMESTAY program, living with a local family!
To apply for this role, please send a CV and covering letter explaining your suitability for the role and how you meet the requirements of the person specification to email@example.com
