Post-doctoral Research Associate Position: Adélie Penguin response to climate change in the Ross Sea region - a full lifecycle approach.
Applications are invited for a full-time (1.0 FTE) Post-doctoral Research Associate appointment in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, at Oregon State University. The successful applicant will fill a key position in an NSF-funded, long-term demographic project designed to study the effects of environmental variation and change on Adélie penguin demography. Current research is focused on understanding the potential carry-over effects of environmental variation during different phases of the penguin life-cycle. We have a long-term database on known-age, Adélie penguin (banded as chicks) with known breeding histories from multiple breeding colonies on Ross Island, Antarctica. We have equipped a sample of these birds at two sites with GLS-TDR tags to learn more about migration, winter habitat use, and foraging behavior during the non-breeding season, and the impacts of non-breeding season conditions on penguin demography.
Applicants must have completed all the requirements for their doctoral program (PhD or equivalent), with demonstrated research accomplishments, and publications in the primary research literature. Applicants should have the necessary skills and experience with sample design and the estimation of animal population parameters as well as an interest and capability in the development of novel approaches to estimating and modeling population dynamics. The position will primarily involve data analysis, modeling and scientific publication writing for peer-reviewed journals, but also at least one season of field work in Antarctica.
The successful candidate will work under the mentorship and supervision of Dr. Katie Dugger, Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Oregon State University, but will also collaborate closely with Dr. David Ainley (H.T. Harvey and Associates) and Dr. Grant Ballard (Point Blue Conservation Science), project co-PI’s. An excellent command of the English language, quantitative analytical skills, and written and verbal communication skills are absolutely required. Special consideration will be given to candidates possessing one or more of the following knowledge and skills: spatial statistics, integrated population models, and Bayesian modeling techniques, as well as a demonstrated ability to thrive in remote and challenging field conditions.

Appointment: Appointments will be intended for a term of one (1) year, with the expectation for renewal of an additional 1.5 years, based upon a satisfactory performance review. Salary ($39,000 to $43,000/year) and full benefits will be commensurate with qualifications of the successful applicants. Start date is negotiable but no later than September 2017 as the expectation is that the successful application will go into the field for the 2017-2018 season (mid-October 2017 through mid-January 2018).
