6 month vacancy - Impact of plastic debris on marine birds

In contribution to the project Circular Ocean, the Environmental Research Institute, University of the Highlands and Islands seeks a motivated and enthusiastic individual to undertake an assessment of the impact of plastic waste on marine birds of northern Europe.

Widely recognised for collaborative activities within European projects, the ERI is the lead partner of the NPA project Circular Ocean which is focused on the impact and opportunities of marine plastic in northern Europe and Arctic region. The successful applicant will be primarily responsible for undertaking research to assess the avian impact of plastic debris which is expected to lead to publication. The approach taken will involve a substantial literature review to establish, from published works, a baseline assessment of current knowledge concerning the impact of plastic debris to marine birds.

The successful candidate will undertake research in collaboration with the RSPB Centre for Conservation Science, and contribute to an assessment of the ecological and environmental impact of marine waste within the Circular Ocean project.

Applications are sought from motivated candidates with expertise in the one or more following areas:

  • Literature review, data handling, synthesis and analysis
  • Environmental contamination and implications for animal and ecological health
