Bill mutilation in albatrosses and other seabirds

Alex Bond, June 18, 2016

Birdlife’s Albatross Task Force and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds are looking to understand the extent of bill mutilation in albatrosses and other seabirds. Several birds have been observed over the last 5-6 years with the end of their upper mandible removed (see, for example, here: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10207521334012343&set=gm.10153067698776546&type=1&theater), or their bills otherwise mutilated. If anyone has any photographs or observations of this troubling phenomenon (e.g., observations at sea, beached birds, birds in rehabilitation), please contact Dr Alex Bond (alex.bond@rspb.org.uk) to contribute to this initiative.
