The Global Ocean Biodiversity Initiative (GOBI; www.gobi.org) is an international network of marine scientists working to promote the conservation and sustainable management of biodiversity in the world's oceans. Established in 2008, the partnership provides scientific input and support to a range of intergovernmental, regional and national organisations to enable the development and use of data, tools and methodologies to identify ecologically or biologically significant areas in the oceans.
GOBI is coordinated by Seascape Consultants Ltd with financial support from the German Federal Environment Ministry. An exciting five-year programme of work has recently been secured via the International Climate Change Initiative (IKI) that will enable GOBI to undertake a number of scientific studies focused on advancing the means for countries and competent international organisations to implement environmental protection and management for specific areas of the world’s oceans.
Seascape Consultants seeks a highly motivated, well-organised and efficient individual to work alongside the GOBI Coordinator and other Secretariat staff in ensuring smooth operation of the five-year project and timely delivery of results. The GOBI Project Officer will have responsibility for liaising with project partners and stakeholders, monitoring activities and progress, managing financial and contractual issues, developing outreach and dissemination materials, supporting project meetings, writing reports and ensuring the communication of progress and results to the wider stakeholder community. In addition, the successful applicant will assist with the broader activities of the GOBI Secretariat, providing support to the global partnership of organisations and their GOBI activities.
The successful candidate will have a postgraduate degree in a relevant marine science discipline and at least two years' experience of managing multidisciplinary and/or multi-partner research programmes. Excellent communication and organisational skills are essential, along with the ability to provide the highest levels of project support to the GOBI Coordinator and partner organisations. An understanding of the marine conservation agenda and the key issues faced in the protection of marine biodiversity is highly desirable.
