Tracking shearwaters

Paloma Carvalho, December 2, 2015

Hi all,

I am looking for suggestions on what kind of logger to use to track great and sooty shearwaters during their non-breeding season at North Atlantic. I catch them at sea, so it is not possible to recapture them to retrieve the loggers. In addition, GSM coverage is not available at the study site. I will probably need to use argos system, but was wondering which manufacturer should I go with.

North Star (http://www.northstarst.com/ ) has a range of solar-powered GPS-PTTs that I'm using for albatrosses. These have many advantages - no perennial battery worries, MUCH cheaper Argos costs (you can upload the GPS data to Argos every 5-6 days) and massively more accurate fixes (GPS-quality versus Argos quality). That said, there are disadvantages; price (for sure!) and I'm not sure if they make a version small enough for Sooty Shears. There might be other products out there that are competitively priced/smaller. But if you can get a solar GPS-PTT, you've got a winner.

Thank you, Ross! The price is out of range for what we can afford. So still looking for other products.
