Hand-driven centrifuge

Paloma Carvalho, June 5, 2014

Does anyone have experience using a hand-driven centrifuge to separate blood components? I'm planning to analyse stable isotope ratio in plasma and RBCs in shearwaters and didn't want to add any coagulant. Is the hand-driven centrifuge doable to use in a boat to separate plasma and RBCs?

Thanks, Paloma

It depends on what kind of manual centrifuge you are planning to use. Once I tried to do a "home made" manual centrifuge and it worked fine but it took like half an hour to properly separate the blood. Are you planning to use capillary tubes or eppendorffs?

Hi Adriana, The only one that I found is for 15ml tubes

Hi Paloma,

I've used a hand-cranked centrifuge for blood samples (7 ml tubes?) from silver gulls to use in stable-isotope (and other biochem) tests.

It required highly intense cranking where a person would be exhausted within 2-3 minutes. Another strong person would need to jump in immediately to keep the speed up. This was repeated for about 30 minutes and the results were good, but not excellent. I think a proper machine would have produced more plasma/serum.

I don't know how much room is in your boat, but I do recommend a few test runs to get efficient. I think we were laughing too hard the first few minutes to do much good!

Good luck!

Hi Paloma, I would suggets you use a portable 12 v centrifuge. It makes things much easier and the job done correctly. You can use a scooter battery and you only need to modify the cigarrete plug to connect it to the battery. I think there is only one model, the zipspin, but it´s been a couple of years since I used one. We used the centrifuge in a cave, with lots of humidity and it worked mostly ok, except for the last samples after 6 hours in the cave and lots of spinning. Try the link below and you can start from there. Suerte!
