SCCS Internship 2014

This is to let you know that we have just opened the application process for internships associated with the 2014 Student Conference on Conservation Science.
These last for one month and take place after interns have attended the 3-day conference in Cambridge (25-27 March 2014).

Once again, we will offer interns attendance at a short course of 2-3 days duration designed to help them to learn a useful skill.
Note that the short course will only be part of the internship: we will not allow interns only to attend the short course without also having an internship project with a UK host organization. Whenever possible, the short courses will take place immediately after the conference, just before the intern arrives at your institution. The short course days will count as part of the total internship period of four weeks. We hope to offer the following:

A. Getting started in R for analysis of conservation science data.
B. Using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in conservation science.
C. An introduction to the Distance package for analyzing transect and point count data.
D. Social survey design.

Please think about how attendance at one of these courses might add value to the work you plan to do with your intern.

We are attaching this year’s report, which illustrates the kinds of things that past interns have done. Our website has clear guidelines for the internship scheme (see http://www.sccs-cam.org/internguide.htm).

Although the deadline for internship applications is 23 October, our experience is that successful candidates usually start working on their applications with their hosts about now.
So we strongly encourage you to think of applicants that you might like to host next March/April and help them to prepare a convincing application.
The final closing date is 31 October 2013, but potential interns must submit their form by 23 October to give you time to check and approve it.
Once they have submitted their application you are sent an automatic email requesting confirmation of your approval. You must submit your approval before the final deadline on 31 October 2013.

Please note that in 2014 the host period will start on 2nd or 3rd April and will end on 26th -28th April. Hosts should make sure that they are available during this period before they commit to the internship programme.

Thank you for your interest and support.

With best wishes
