This post is an exciting opportunity for an appropriately qualified and experienced ornithologist to work in the rapidly expanding marine renewable energy sector in Scotland and be directly involved in helping Government to achieve its targets for renewable energy generation. The post holder will work closely with other specialists and casework advisers within the unit to provide sound and timely scientific advice in response to consultations for marine renewable’s and related developments affecting Scotland’s seas. The post holder will represent SNH with industry and Government and upon technical working groups as appropriate. The post holder will also be expected to contribute to the wider work of the Unit inputting to PR, awareness raising and training initiatives as relevant.

You must be educated to degree level in a subject relevant to natural science such as zoology, biology, ecology or environmental science, plus relevant post graduate experience. You must also have a sound understanding of marine renewable technologies, their potential impacts on the natural heritage and relevant legislation and consent processes applicable in Scotland. A clear understanding of conservation and planning legislation relevant to birds and Scotland’s seas including the EC birds Directive, Habitats Regulations and the Marine (Scotland) Act is a must. You must also have knowledge and understanding of the ecology of the sea birds of northern Europe, and an interest in their practical conservation. Finally, you must have excellent communication skills, both oral and written with strong interpersonal skills to enable effective representation to a variety of stakeholders including the ability to persuade those whose priorities lie elsewhere.
