Blast fishing in Chile?

Grant RW Humphries, May 22, 2013

Hi everyone,

I'm writing because I have just recently watched this news report:

news report

I am wondering if anyone could shed some light on this problem for me (and the larger community). How big of a problem is blast fishing in Chile, and what species are influenced by it?

In amongst the filmed wreckage, I saw, what looked like, several species of shag, but wasn't sure if there was anything else.

Also - has this type of fishing been seen elsewhere? and have there been recorded effects on seabirds?

Thanks! Grant

I did a blue whale survey off Chile in 1998-99 and we saw 2 dead sperm whales and a dead pygmy sperm whale (Kogia breviceps) during the cruise - I remarked in my notes how odd it was to see them (finding dead whales at sea is normally very rare). A Chilean observer that was with us said it was because of the dynamite fishing they did in the area.

In Peruvian waters, blast fishing is common. I saw dead seabirds in peruvian shore similar to the film in any cases. Local people say that was for blast fishing.
