Seabirds and waste producing fishery vessels - continued

David Gremillet, May 18, 2013

To continue the discussion launched by Steve Votier upon seabird/vessel interactions here is a paper which used seabird GPS tracking and VMS data to investigate interactions between purse-seiners, trawlers and Cape gannets in the Benguela. The take-home message is that there are indeed interactions, yet that over 9 breeding seasons (the duration of our GPS tracking exercise) Cape gannets only seeked trawlers when pelagic fish stocks are at their lowest (something we know from concurrent hydroacoustic surveys). The paper is in early view and I can send PDFs upon request.
